The History of Doulting Village Hall (abridged)

In 1978 Somerset Education Authority finally succumbed to local pressure and commissioned a new school to be built on the old St Andrew’s Doulting Stone Quarry. The County Council wrote to the Parish Council to enquire if the Village would be interested in a joint venture on the hall part of the proposed school. Subsequently, an extension to the budget was agreed and the Village set out with gusto to raise its share of the budget. The result was a main hall 1/3rd larger than that orignally offered, with obvious benefit to both the School and Village.

Over the years there have been several additions, starting in 1979 with the purchase by the Village Hall of adjoining land to create the car park (later extended by the purchase of additional land.) All was made available to the School during School hours. An extension to the main hall was built to form the Village Hall’s Community Room. Further extensions later provided new toilet facilities as well as new storage space. A refit to what was originally a storage cupboard provided opportunity for the Village Hall bar and kitchenette.

Various swaps and changes of space have occurred over the years reflecting the growth of St Aldhelm’s Primary School, with support from the Village Hall Committee. Equipment has been purchased collaboratively over the years for the benefit of both the school and its pupils and the local community. Doulting Village Hall continues to operate with a licence, conveyance and Trust Deed set up between Doulting Village Hall Committee, Doulting Parish Council, The Diocese of Bath and Wells, and Somerset County Council.

A Charities Commission (UK) Registered Charity, Doulting Village Hall and its Management Committee is run by volunteers for the benefit of Doulting Village and the wider local community.
